Atlanta’s Medieval Castle

The Middle Ages inspired those in the Southern United States yearning back to the Lost Cause to display their ‘fortress mentality’ toward people of color by various segregationist and racist practices. One of the most obvious visual displays of this attitude is Atlanta’s Rhodes Hall (1905), a veritable shrine to the Lost Cause, including painted and stained glass windows celebrating the glory days of the pre-Civil War past in the aesthetic of the pre-modern, medieval past. For more information, see Richard Utz, “Cupid at the Castle: Romance, Medievalism, and Race at Atlanta’s Rhodes Hall,” at The Public Medievalist.
